Mokume-Gane is an ancient, traditional Japanese forging method that creates unique, once-off patterns in the metal. Directly translated, it means “wood eye metal’ - referring to the very distinctive woodgrain pattern that this technique creates. Using contrasting, laminated non-ferrous metals (metals that contain no iron) such as silver, gold, copper, palladium, platinum etc, the layers of metals are alternated and fused together in a very similar fashion to the more popular Damascus Steel ; creating elegant and unique striations for each individual ring. No two will ever be the same and as such, this caliber of craftsmanship tends to command a hefty price tag. The process is painstakingly intricate and time consuming and the skill involved is extremely rare to find nowadays, given the hand crafting intensity of the technique in an age where most luxury gent’s rings are 3D printed or mass produced. It doesn’t end there either. Mokume-Gane is a regular feature in the upper echelons of Fine Art Jewellery. The possibilities are quite endless, with statement pieces like bangles, cuffs and necklaces. No concept is too challenging for us however, we are always keen to put our creativity to work – especially when such interesting ideas like Mokume-Gane are involved!
